How Probe Calibration Fits Into Our Service Work

Calibration can be done as part of scheduled maintenance or as a standalone visit. Our approach is straightforward and built for operational compliance, not laboratory certification.

What we do on-site

  • Verify each probe against a reference instrument at relevant operating points (typically an ice-point check at 0°C and a check at the unit’s normal operating temperature)
  • Record the as-found reading before any adjustment
  • Adjust the controller offset where the sensor is in tolerance but reading off, or replace the probe where it has drifted beyond useful range or failed
  • Record the as-left reading after adjustment or replacement
  • Provide a written calibration record covering each probe checked, the readings, and any work performed

What we are honest about

This is operational calibration for accuracy and compliance, not NATA-accredited certificate issuance. Most Sydney commercial refrigeration sites do not need accredited certificates. They need probes that read correctly and a record that proves it. That is what we deliver. If your auditor, regulator, or internal QA requires a NATA-traceable certificate, we will say so before any work starts and arrange referral to an accredited laboratory partner.

When You Should Book Probe Calibration

There are five common triggers for calibrating refrigeration probes:

  • When readings stop matching reality. If your controller and your portable thermometer disagree, one of them is wrong. Calibration tells you which.
  • Annually as part of HACCP. Most food safety plans require routine verification of monitoring equipment. Annual calibration is the standard cadence.
  • After a new install. New probes ship within manufacturer tolerance but should be verified against your actual operating conditions once commissioned.
  • After a fault, knock or sensor replacement. Physical damage, a refrigerant change, or a controller fault are all reasons to re-verify before relying on the reading.
  • Before a scheduled audit. If your audit is in the next 60 to 90 days, calibrate now so the records sit cleanly in your QA file.

What You Receive After the Visit

Every calibration visit produces a written record you can sight to an auditor, attach to your food safety plan, or file with your QA system. The record includes:

  • Each probe and sensor checked, identified by location and equipment
  • As-found and as-left readings at the verification points used
  • Reference instrument used and its own calibration status
  • Adjustments made, probes replaced, or further work recommended
  • Date, technician and recommended next calibration

Where probe calibration is built into a service agreement, this record is generated automatically as part of your scheduled visit reporting.

When You Need NATA-Accredited Calibration Instead

Some applications specifically require NATA-traceable calibration certificates. These typically include pharmaceutical manufacturing, certain pathology and clinical trial settings, regulated laboratory equipment, and any application where your auditor or regulator names NATA traceability in writing.

If this applies to your site, we will tell you straight. Freelance Refrigeration is not a NATA-accredited calibration laboratory, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we will do is coordinate with an accredited lab partner, schedule the visit around your refrigeration servicing, and make sure the probes and instruments are accessible when they arrive.

For the majority of Sydney commercial and industrial refrigeration sites, operational calibration is what HACCP, food safety, and internal QA actually require, and it is what we provide.
