Two jobs wearing the same name
There are two different reasons people call us about probe calibration, and we’ve learned not to sell them the same way.
If all you need is a sticker on the door before an inspector shows up, that’s a fair and common ask. You don’t need a lecture about instrumentation, you need it done properly and priced honestly, and we’ll do that.
If you’ve had product go bad and you don’t know why, or you’re trying to work out whether your last supplier actually checked anything, that’s a different conversation, and it’s the one the rest of this page is written for.
You’re probably wondering if “calibration” from us is any different to the $10 sticker service. It is, and we’ll show you exactly why rather than just tell you.
What real calibration actually involves
A lot of the market checks a probe with a $40 technician’s probe dunked in a cup of ice and water. It’s fast, it’s cheap, and it puts a sticker on your door. It also tells you almost nothing.
We check every probe against a dedicated calibration instrument worth over $5,000. It’s recalibrated annually and stored in a case, away from vibration, sunlight and moisture, because all three of those things drift a reference instrument too, if you let them.
We check at two points, not one. Ice point, at 0 degrees, and again at the temperature your room actually runs at. A probe can read perfectly in a cup of ice water and still be out by two degrees at minus 18, which is the only reading that matters to your stock. Checking one point and calling it calibrated is how a drifting probe passes.
If a probe is out by a small margin, it can be corrected with a computer offset. Past 2 degrees out, it doesn’t get offset, it gets physically replaced. Offsetting a probe that far gone is a patch on a fault, not a fix, and it’s not something we do.
When a probe does need replacing, it’s like-for-like only, matching the existing brand and type. There’s no universal “better” probe, it depends on what’s already installed and wired into your controller. Quality still varies, stainless steel against plastic, and price runs from around $50 up to $150 or more per probe depending on grade. A new probe gets soldered in, not twisted, and properly insulated against moisture. Moisture getting into a twisted joint is one of the quietest, most common causes of a probe drifting in the first place.
None of this is complicated. It’s just not what a $40 probe and a cup of ice water can do.
The quiet way probes go wrong
A probe that’s slightly out doesn’t usually announce itself. The room still looks like it’s running. The controller still switches the compressor on and off. Nothing beeps. That’s exactly the problem.
Here’s the part most people don’t know about. Every controller has its own deadband, usually around 2 degrees either side of the set point, before it bothers switching the compressor on or off. That’s normal and by design. The problem is when it stacks with a probe reading that’s also out by 2 degrees. Put the two together and a room can sit there not cooling until it hits 6 degrees, and stop again at 4. Nobody told you the room was running that loose. The controller was doing exactly what it was set to do, on a reading that wasn’t telling the truth.
If you’re holding meat, this matters in a way you can put a number on. Every degree above the correct holding temperature takes a week off shelf life. A probe out by 2 degrees is two weeks of shelf life gone, on stock you’ve already paid for.
That’s the cost of a probe drifting quietly and nobody catching it. Calibration isn’t really about the sticker. It’s about catching that before it costs you stock.
When it isn’t the probe at all
The other half of doing this properly is knowing when the probe isn’t the problem. Two real jobs.

Moisture had gotten into a probe in one of NNA’s high-humidity fruit-ripening rooms. The readings were off, which changed how the fruit was ripening. It looked like a program fault on the controller. It wasn’t. It was probe drift caused by moisture, and it took someone who knew to check the probe itself, not just the settings, to find it.

Product came off display and went back into the cool room. It should have dropped from 20 degrees back to 2 within 4 to 6 hours. It wasn’t getting there. The obvious guess was the probe. It wasn’t. The room was missing 40kW of cooling capacity. Different fault, different fix, and swapping the probe would have solved nothing and cost time the room didn’t have.
Why this matters to you
Anyone can swap a part. Working out which part is the actual problem is the job. If a technician’s first move is always “replace the probe,” you’re paying for guesswork, not diagnosis.

You get as-found and as-left readings for every probe checked, so you can see what it was reading before we touched it and what it’s reading now. You get the reference instrument details we checked it against. You get the technician’s details on the record. If a probe was replaced, that’s on there too.
That’s the paperwork an inspector actually wants to see, and it’s the paperwork that tells you whether your last calibration was real.

What it costs
A typical multi-cool-room calibration job runs $2,000 to $5,000, depending on how many rooms and probes are involved. If you’ve only got a single probe to check, it’s well under that.
We’re not going to make you ask twice or wait for a quote to find that out. Silence on price makes people assume the worst, and they’re usually right to.
Where we’re straight about NATA
We don’t issue NATA-accredited calibration certificates. If your compliance requirement specifically calls for one, tell us and we’ll coordinate with an accredited partner to get you that certificate.
If it doesn’t, and for most operators it doesn’t, what you get from us is a proper calibration against a $5,000 reference instrument, done and documented properly, not a certificate you’re paying extra for and don’t actually need.
We’d rather tell you that up front than let you find out after you’ve paid for something you didn’t have to.
No call-out fee, no lift fee
We don’t charge a call-out fee to come and calibrate your probes. We don’t charge you a scissor lift fee either, even on jobs where a lift is genuinely needed to reach the equipment.
